The Importance of Family Activities

People, by nature, are designed to survive in groups. Other species that have similar traits are dogs, fish, bees and ants, to name just a few. The 'families' of these animals may differ in how they live but each are dependent on their group for their own survival. An individual that is separated from their group will have a hard time coping independently, if at all.

Some people learn how to survive on their own by teaching themselves survival techniques, but these individuals are very rare and usually stem from abusive or disfunctional family homes.

A family is important because it nurtures a child while it is a helpless infant until they are grown adults. The family provides physical and emotional support, keeps you safe and secure, provides knowledge as the you grow to adulthood. This is the basic function of a family in todays society, even if it doesn't usually work out that way.

Family activities are extremely important because it brings the parents and children together (grandparents and other relatives should be included on occasion.)  to enjoy something as a family. Children become more well rounded when they have parents that take an interest in them and join them in fun activities. In today's society the unity of family is dissolving rapidly.  Sometimes this is due to both parents working or a raising children as a single parent. Smart parents make the time to do activities together with thier children.

Joining your children in fun activities will help develop strong, healthy relationships with your kids.  Here is a studio in Orange County that has added family classes to it's schedule and got a wonderful response.

Decrease Childhood Obesity Through Dance

Weight problems are not only a big issue for adults but also a significant problem for children. We can see the phenomenon of childhood obesity everywhere. We can see it in the classroom, at the swimming pool, on the playgrounds, and in the malls. The worst thing, childhood obesity statistics have increased over the last year.  The increase in statistics is most likely caused by the change in people's lifestyle due to our decreased economy and all the bad effects it has on our society.  People in general are stressed out.

When we are stressed out, our children are stressed out and the trickle down effect causes weight and emotional problems in our kids.  These issues need to be addressed at an early stage to help decrease obesity, boost self esteem and self image as well as instill a positive life outlook in our children.

Regular physical exercise is an important part of EVERYONE'S life.  People that live stagnant lifestyles will usually raise children that live stagnant lifestyles as well.  Many suffer from obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes and many other health problems. Stagnant adults lead to stagnant children.  It is absolutely necessary to have your children involved in regular physical activities to ensure the installation of positive life practices for them.

Learning to dance will help boost self esteem, teach respect of the opposite sex, provide regular exercise and promote a team player experience for your children.  Dancing lessons are frequently much less expensive than sports or other outdoor activities.  It puts your child on a stage for you to watch and be proud of.  It also plays a significant role in decreasing obesity and low self esteem. It will also decrease obesity in adults if you take lessons at the same time.

It is a proven fact that people who dance, live longer.

OC Arts Center is a Non Profit organization that provides a Performing Arts Institution so that all the kids in the community can enjoy the experience of dance and performing arts.

Here are OC Arts Center we offer lessons that are for the entire family.  We are dedicated to increasing awareness in our children and their families the importance of exercise and general good health and wellness practices.  Many of our children come from underpriveledged families and need your support to be a part of our program.

Our programs include dancing and arts lessons for ages 1-17.  We try to include all styles and levels so that there is something for everyone.  Our program is multicultural and includes dances from cultures such as Mexico, India and Columbia.  Our teachers have many years of experience and play a significant role in keeping the kids active, involved and happy.

These programs are not without costs and only through the support of the community can we continue to provide Visual, Performing and Language Arts to all the children in the community.  We survive through the donations of businesses and people in the community that believe in keeping our kids off the street and in a safe, healthy environment.  Our teens don't drink, smoke or use drugs.  They don't rob liquor stores or feel like they need to bully the next kids because they are different.  We strive to provide them with the best possible life experience in the Arts.

Please help by making a donation of any kind to our program.  Every little bit helps.

Teach your children to enjoy life.  Enjoy the moment and do what makes them happy.  Dancing has brought enjoyment to millions of adults and children for many many years.  Join OC Arts or help support our community with your donation.

 The Five Basic Positions

  • First position - feet well rotated in 'turn-out', touching heels. Make as straight an alignment as possible. Knees are touching with legs straight.
  • Second position - feet turned out along a straight line like first position, but heels are apart.
  • Third position - feet are aligned to turn-out, but with one foot to the front with heel close to the arch of the back foot.
  • Fourth position - feet turned out as in first position, with heel of one foot is placed close to the toe of other foot, so that the legs are crossed. Feet about a foot apart to the front.
  • Fifth position - as fourth, with feet together

 Pirouettes

  • A 'pirouette' is a controlled turn on one leg, beginning with one (or both) legs in pli, and then rising onto pointe (or demi-pointe for men). The other leg can be held in either retir position, attitude, arabesque level or in second position.
  • Often a pirouette will return to starting position, or finish in arabesque or attitude positions, or proceed otherwise.
  • DID YOU KNOW? The record for most pirouttes done at one time is 36 rotations!

Side Leap

  • To do a side leap, it's easiest to begin with a run, and then leap, with your legs in the splits. Turn your legs out with your knees at the side. Point your toes, keep a straight back and your arms relaxed. Also ensure your legs are straight and your head is high.
  • Your arms can be in open fifth, or you can move your arm out at the side in front of your shoulder so the audience can still see your face.

Pre-Performance Anxiety Tip For Dancers:
Water
Did you know a proper eating and drinking habits for a ballet dancer can help eliminate pre-performance anxiety? Today we look at the simplest of them all: water Fresh water is a helpful tool as an anxiety cure. Almost all processes of the body are monitored by and linked to the efficient flow of water through our system. Water carries hormones, chemical messengers, and nutrients to all the organs of the body. If we don?t keep our bodies hydrated with plenty of water, we may experience a number of signals from our bodies such as anxiety, which normally we wouldn?t think of as being related to poor water intake.

Always Stretch Before Dancing to Increase Flexibility and Decrease Risk of Injury

Stretching is the act of lengthening the muscles, in order to increase elasticity, tone, and strength and muscle flexibility. Many dancers stretch before or after dancing in order to increase performance, reduce the chance of injury and to prevent stiffness. Stretching can also improve range of joint motion, suppleness and posture. Plus it improves general wellbeing and vitality. In the coming weeks I?ll be posting some of the best stretches for ballet. Tip: Yoga is also a great way to stretch, not to mention its many other benefits like mental relaxation and as an exercise in itself.
