The Importance of Family Activities

People, by nature, are designed to survive in groups. Other species that have similar traits are dogs, fish, bees and ants, to name just a few. The 'families' of these animals may differ in how they live but each are dependent on their group for their own survival. An individual that is separated from their group will have a hard time coping independently, if at all.

Some people learn how to survive on their own by teaching themselves survival techniques, but these individuals are very rare and usually stem from abusive or disfunctional family homes.

A family is important because it nurtures a child while it is a helpless infant until they are grown adults. The family provides physical and emotional support, keeps you safe and secure, provides knowledge as the you grow to adulthood. This is the basic function of a family in todays society, even if it doesn't usually work out that way.

Family activities are extremely important because it brings the parents and children together (grandparents and other relatives should be included on occasion.)  to enjoy something as a family. Children become more well rounded when they have parents that take an interest in them and join them in fun activities. In today's society the unity of family is dissolving rapidly.  Sometimes this is due to both parents working or a raising children as a single parent. Smart parents make the time to do activities together with thier children.

Joining your children in fun activities will help develop strong, healthy relationships with your kids.  Here is a studio in Orange County that has added family classes to it's schedule and got a wonderful response.

Decrease Childhood Obesity Through Dance

Weight problems are not only a big issue for adults but also a significant problem for children. We can see the phenomenon of childhood obesity everywhere. We can see it in the classroom, at the swimming pool, on the playgrounds, and in the malls. The worst thing, childhood obesity statistics have increased over the last year.  The increase in statistics is most likely caused by the change in people's lifestyle due to our decreased economy and all the bad effects it has on our society.  People in general are stressed out.

When we are stressed out, our children are stressed out and the trickle down effect causes weight and emotional problems in our kids.  These issues need to be addressed at an early stage to help decrease obesity, boost self esteem and self image as well as instill a positive life outlook in our children.

Regular physical exercise is an important part of EVERYONE'S life.  People that live stagnant lifestyles will usually raise children that live stagnant lifestyles as well.  Many suffer from obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes and many other health problems. Stagnant adults lead to stagnant children.  It is absolutely necessary to have your children involved in regular physical activities to ensure the installation of positive life practices for them.

Learning to dance will help boost self esteem, teach respect of the opposite sex, provide regular exercise and promote a team player experience for your children.  Dancing lessons are frequently much less expensive than sports or other outdoor activities.  It puts your child on a stage for you to watch and be proud of.  It also plays a significant role in decreasing obesity and low self esteem. It will also decrease obesity in adults if you take lessons at the same time.

It is a proven fact that people who dance, live longer.

OC Arts Center is a Non Profit organization that provides a Performing Arts Institution so that all the kids in the community can enjoy the experience of dance and performing arts.

Here are OC Arts Center we offer lessons that are for the entire family.  We are dedicated to increasing awareness in our children and their families the importance of exercise and general good health and wellness practices.  Many of our children come from underpriveledged families and need your support to be a part of our program.

Our programs include dancing and arts lessons for ages 1-17.  We try to include all styles and levels so that there is something for everyone.  Our program is multicultural and includes dances from cultures such as Mexico, India and Columbia.  Our teachers have many years of experience and play a significant role in keeping the kids active, involved and happy.

These programs are not without costs and only through the support of the community can we continue to provide Visual, Performing and Language Arts to all the children in the community.  We survive through the donations of businesses and people in the community that believe in keeping our kids off the street and in a safe, healthy environment.  Our teens don't drink, smoke or use drugs.  They don't rob liquor stores or feel like they need to bully the next kids because they are different.  We strive to provide them with the best possible life experience in the Arts.

Please help by making a donation of any kind to our program.  Every little bit helps.

Teach your children to enjoy life.  Enjoy the moment and do what makes them happy.  Dancing has brought enjoyment to millions of adults and children for many many years.  Join OC Arts or help support our community with your donation.

 The Five Basic Positions

  • First position - feet well rotated in 'turn-out', touching heels. Make as straight an alignment as possible. Knees are touching with legs straight.
  • Second position - feet turned out along a straight line like first position, but heels are apart.
  • Third position - feet are aligned to turn-out, but with one foot to the front with heel close to the arch of the back foot.
  • Fourth position - feet turned out as in first position, with heel of one foot is placed close to the toe of other foot, so that the legs are crossed. Feet about a foot apart to the front.
  • Fifth position - as fourth, with feet together

 Pirouettes

  • A 'pirouette' is a controlled turn on one leg, beginning with one (or both) legs in pli, and then rising onto pointe (or demi-pointe for men). The other leg can be held in either retir position, attitude, arabesque level or in second position.
  • Often a pirouette will return to starting position, or finish in arabesque or attitude positions, or proceed otherwise.
  • DID YOU KNOW? The record for most pirouttes done at one time is 36 rotations!

Side Leap

  • To do a side leap, it's easiest to begin with a run, and then leap, with your legs in the splits. Turn your legs out with your knees at the side. Point your toes, keep a straight back and your arms relaxed. Also ensure your legs are straight and your head is high.
  • Your arms can be in open fifth, or you can move your arm out at the side in front of your shoulder so the audience can still see your face.

Pre-Performance Anxiety Tip For Dancers:
Water
Did you know a proper eating and drinking habits for a ballet dancer can help eliminate pre-performance anxiety? Today we look at the simplest of them all: water Fresh water is a helpful tool as an anxiety cure. Almost all processes of the body are monitored by and linked to the efficient flow of water through our system. Water carries hormones, chemical messengers, and nutrients to all the organs of the body. If we don?t keep our bodies hydrated with plenty of water, we may experience a number of signals from our bodies such as anxiety, which normally we wouldn?t think of as being related to poor water intake.

Always Stretch Before Dancing to Increase Flexibility and Decrease Risk of Injury

Stretching is the act of lengthening the muscles, in order to increase elasticity, tone, and strength and muscle flexibility. Many dancers stretch before or after dancing in order to increase performance, reduce the chance of injury and to prevent stiffness. Stretching can also improve range of joint motion, suppleness and posture. Plus it improves general wellbeing and vitality. In the coming weeks I?ll be posting some of the best stretches for ballet. Tip: Yoga is also a great way to stretch, not to mention its many other benefits like mental relaxation and as an exercise in itself.

Teach Hip Hop Dancing to Your Kids

There are a many different styles and moves that are part of the dance style "Hip Hop".  Many people believe that the conrnerstone of this style is break dancing.  Breakdancing is old school street dancing that has evolved into a major contender in the world of dance.  Hip Hop and breakdancing are often taught hand in hand when doing choreography and cool routines to "wow" the audience.  There are soooo many styles that have evolved from these styles over time. Some examples are Funk, Popping and Locking, jigging, freaking, krumping and house.  These are all styles evolving from hip hop and break dancing.

There is no doubt of the influence hip hop dancing has on the kids that it touches.  Here in the USA, many people take their kids to hip hop lessons and it seems that every teacher has their own style and form.  At this time there is no syllabus to say what is right or wrong for this style so for most, it's very freestyle and form fitting.  YOu can dance to your own inner beat and many kids are learning to get out there and bust a move with the best of them.

Not really getting it?  Turn on your favorite music video station and watch for 10 minutes, you will see exactly what i'm talking about.  Most top 40 videos include some style of hip hop or breakdancing during the dance portion of the video.  Many of these dances catch on with the young kids and they do it at school and ont he streets while showing off to their friends.

Hip Hop and breakdancing is a great way to get kids to express themselves as individuals and learn to work together with other kids with like interests.  Most dancers are drug and alcohol free because it is VERY difficult to bust out great moves while under the influence.  It's also a great way to get exercise and keep your heart and lungs in good shape.

Teaching hip hop dance can help physical education stay relevant and teach self confidence, lifelong healthy habits, and how to have fun socializing. Teachers get kids into hip hop dance with fundamentals, basic choreography, and application of moves.

Check out your local studio to see what classes are best for your kids.  Many kids programs these days are non profit because of the present economic times.  Most people that teach dance, do it for the kids and because they love to do it.  Find the classes near you that fit your schedule.

Dancing Improves Life Expectancy and Cardiovascular Health

People 50 years and older that engage in consistent, regular physical activity will live longer and have less cardiovascular disease.

Statistical evidence supports the positive effects of physical activities in the aging process. There is also a huge amount of evidence that supports the fact that these activities help minimize and/or prevent the development of cardiovascular disease. Physical activities can include sports such as tennis, basketball, swimming, running etc. but the one that seems to increase not only improved physical health and life expectancy but also mental health, is dancing.

There was a study in The Netherlands by a Professor Oscar H. Franco MD that calculated the effects of regular physical activities (dancing), on life expectancy and years living with or without cardiovascular disease among people ages 50 and older. This study followed over 5000 residents of Framingham, Mass. Over 46 years. They calculated the effects of low, moderate, or high levels of physical activity (dancing), adjusted for age, sex, smoking and coexistent diseases such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes, left ventricular hypertrophy, ankle edema and pulmonary disease.

The results are that total life expectancy significantly improves in people who dance.

Moderate and high levels of activity led to 1.3 and 3.7 years more in total life expectancy, AND 1.1 and 3.2 more years living WITHOUT cardiovascular disease, respectively for men aged 50 or older. These statistics were obtained by comparing with those that lived sedentary lives or only maintained low physical activities. For women the differences were 1.5 and 3.5 years in total life expectancy and 1.3 and 3.3 more years free of cardiovascular disease.

This study shows that regular dancing not only prolongs total life expectancy but also a life expectancy free of cardiovascular disease at age 50. Cardiovascular disease is currently the number one cause of death in people ages 50 and up.

Other benefits of dancing are improved balance, posture, core strength and prevention of obesity. Dancing usually takes place in a social setting in which interaction with other people and the fun people have doing it, they frequently don’t even know they are getting moderate to high levels of activities and taking an active role in living longer, happier lives.

Immune System Support

My boyfriend recently had a back injury.  Well, I'm sure it wasn't recent but a long time in the making with a blow out a few weeks ago.  He bent over to pick up something and BAM!!!!  The poor guy was walking around on crutches and unable to carry out normal activities of daily living.  The pain was excrutiating.  Now this was very disconcerting due to the fact that at this time, he doesn't have health insurance to cover major injuries.  So we paid cash for an MRI and found out that he has a 11-12 mm extrucated disc in his back.  The Dr. said that he would have to have surgery to fix it.  We were quite distraught over this as we could afford a doctor visit, but surgery, no way.

We own a dance studio together and one of our clients and friend, came to us and suggested to take the supplements that they were on. They gave us a story of when they first started and that it changed their lives.  Now this couple is NOT 20yrs old but middle aged such as we are.  They are at our studio every Friday and they dance till midnight as well as giving line dance lessons and more.  I can see that they are quite healthy.  She never complains of pain in her feet or back like we do.  She stated that after starting these supplements her bone spur did not cause her pain any more and her husbands digestion and bowel movements were regulated {like I really needed to know THAT!!}.

So we decided to try it.  We actually signed up to distribute so we could get it even cheaper and stay on it for a long period of time.  Well, it's been about 3 weeks and my boyfreinds back still hurts but he IS walking and occasionally even dances.  The only thing he is taking is the Acai Soda and the Colostrum.  He doesn't even take motrin on a regular basis any more.  Pretty amazing.

As for me, I did it too because we bought all that product.  I feel like I have a ton more energy and my feet are much less sore than they used to be.  Overall I am very impressed with the product so I decided to let people know and introduce to it.  You can try it or not but it worked for us and it worked for our line dance teachers.  So maybe it will work for you too.

Immune Tree Certified Colostrum powder placed into a two to three-month tub. Take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (approximately 3,000 - 6,000 mg) of powder in the mouth and allow it to dissolve. Or it can be blended with any health beverage into a smoothie; just add ice.

This "cornerstone" whole food has over 700 constituents providing natural nano-technology for balancing and regenerating the body. It contains the entire IGF-1 superfamily, focusing on antiaging; over 95 Immune factors that support health and wellness; all of your essential amino acids, fatty acids, and glyconutrients; and metabolic factors, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.

Professor Emeritus Dr. Donald H. Lein of Cornell University certifies ONLY Immune Tree Colostrum to be "True Colostrum". We use only Immune Tree Certified Colostrum which is low heat spray dried, chemical-free, and 100% natural with NO fillers of any sort!

AcaiSoda is a synergistic blend of supplements so strong that most people feel the difference in 10-15 minutes. Simply mix one sachet into 2-4 oz of water, allow it to activate, and enjoy! Take once daily.

AcaiSoda is an effervescent/isotonic blend which contains Acai berry (pulp), Colostrum, Laminaria Japonica Fucoidan, Clinoptilolite, Fucoxanthin, and Acetyl L-Carnitine. This product is designed to provide Energy, Loss of Inches (especially belly fat), Stress Reduction, Balancing of pH, and Removal of Heavy Metals. In addition, AcaiSoda works on the body's four most important systems simultaneously (the Neurological System, Endocrine System, Immune System and Aging System), restoring balance to your body.

Children Encouraged to Explore the Arts

Bea Hive Dance Studio’s Summer Camps
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sunday, May 2, 2010

It never takes long for the excitement of summer vacation to turn into boredom and an itching to get back to school to see friends. With parents still working, day cares are often a solution to keep kids entertained over the summer in a safe environment. But Bea Hive Dance Studio is solving summer restlessness and day care needs with something better: eight weeks of dynamic and educational visual, performing, and language arts workshops from June 28 to Aug. 21, 2010, at the Bea Hive Dance Studio in Garden Grove, Calif.

The Bea Hive summer camps will assist each child in developing his or her own interests by presenting them with a diverse range of arts – most of which Owner Beatrix Dozier says are not being taught in public schools.

“Public schools no longer educate children in many of the arts, so we wanted to be a source where children can still learn about this important part of culture and be encouraged to explore their creative sides,” Dozier said.

Visual arts workshops will allow children to try their hand at sketching, drawing cartoons, doing special effects makeup, designing costumes, sewing, and more. Students will discover if they have a flair for the dramatic through the performing arts workshops focusing on music, theatre, Broadway, and various cultural styles of dancing including hip-hop, salsa and Latin dancing, Indian folk dancing, lyrical, contemporary, technique, and more. Finally, children can hone their language arts skills with one-hour reading and writing workshops every day.

“Our summer camps are different from regular day care programs in that they’re highly educational, energetic, and well-rounded,” said Program Director Brenda Huey.

Additionally, Dozier and Huey understand the tight budgets of families these days and will start planning a non-profit organization this month to allow children from low-income families to still participate in the various beneficial courses Bea Hive offers.

Registration for the summer camps is open to children ages 6 to 16. The program will culminate with a student showcase from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21.

For more information, please contact Program Director Brenda Huey at (714) 638-5601 or visit http://beahiveballroom.com./

The Bea Hive Dance Studio and Event Ballroom is a family-owned business that provides dance lessons, summer day camps, performance teams and more for children 18 months to 16 years old.
