Bachata Is The Newest Craze in Dance Styles

Bachata music emerged in the early 1960s as a romantic tune, which is different from guitar music to dance to. With time, Bachata’s rhythm was accelerated and a new dance step was started and Bachata began to be classified as dance music.

Bachata musicians got inspiration from a variety of music genres. The most influential was the Cuban bolero.  Also from Mexican rancheros and corridos, Dominican merengue, Cuban son, guaracha and guajira, Colombian-Ecuadorian vals campesino and pasillo, and Puerto Rican plena and jibaro.

Bachata has been through a series of phases since its evolution.  The Bachata style of music was mostly played by rural musicians and this made people relate it with low class; the musicians and the listeners were kind of frowned upon and began to be referred as Bachatero. Bachata's reputation got worse over time. The worsening conditions of the Bachateros further degraded Bachata’s reputation.  The tempo of the music accelerated and the lyrics started including drinking and womanizing. Consequently, Bachata became associated with unacceptable social elements like alcohol, violence, sex and the like.

Over the past 40 years the Bachata music as made several changes and has redefined itself.  Jose Manuel Calderon has been credited with the recording of the first Bachata single - Borracho de amor. This song is very romantic. After the electric guitar it was much easier to get to Bachata.  Bolero remains the most significant influence although the two genres are quite distinguishable. Some of the Bachata phases are listed here:

Bachata Bolero:  Alow tempo, emotional style and romantic words.

Cabaret Bachata:  This kind of music was essentially rough and performed in cabarets.

Sexual Double Entendre Bachata: During the 80s, the Bachata music began to include songs and lyrics that implied sexual meanings.
Tecno Bachata: Certain liberal middle-class musicians showed interest in Bachata and manipulated it such that their songs reflected more of Bolero than Bachata. Juan Luis Guerra is a musician of this time who became increasingly popular in Latin America as well as the United States and Europe.

Frontier Bachata: Luis Vargas, Anthony Santos and Raulin Rodriguez conquered Bachata in the early 1990s; they included as much Merengue as Bachata in their collection.
Romantic Bachata: Anthony Santos pioneered this form of Bachata where there began to be a transformation into simpler and more romantic Bachata. Joe Veras was another popular Bachatero who increased Bachata’s pace towards romanticism.
Vallenato and Bachata: In the late 1990s, Bachata began to involve more middle-class musicians who attended school and studied other genres formally. Martires de León introduced the strategy of recording Colombian Vallenatos as Bachatas; Luis Vargas followed this style. This made Bachata acceptable to a wider audience.
The New York School: Aventura, a Dominican group, uses sound effects along with R&B influenced vocals which has attracted international audiences far and wide.
Bachata dance consists of certain simple steps that create a back and forth as well as a sideway motion. The dance starts with the right foot and similar steps are repeated with the left foot; Bachata can be distinguished by the distinctive and sensuous body movements. Salsa and Merengue are dance styles that have been known to be similar to Bachata but the three are quite different. Salsa is an informal dance style from the Caribbean which requires a partner. It incorporates different steps, patterns, timings, movement on dance floor, attitude, dress codes, preference of turns and moves etc. Merengue originates from the Dominican Republic in which partners hold each other in a closed position. In perfect Merengue, the hips of the two partners move in the same direction. Circular and sideway motions are possible; and there can be variation in choreography. The dance patterns of Salsa, Merengue and Bachata are alike but there are slight moves and patterns which differentiate the three.

Bachata is now the new craze for many latin dancers.  Bachata classes, lessons and even congresses have emerged over the last year.  Bachata is a very sexy, sensuous dance and for those that want to give it a try, look for good salsa teachers that have added bachata to their repetoir.

Even Obama Listens to Hip Hop for Dance and Fitness Time

Did you know that Barack Obama likes to play expletive-laden songs while exercising in the gym?Our American President had his latest album Blueprint 3 playing during a recent telephone conversation.
    Says Jay-Z, husband of Beyonce.
Jay-Z, 40,  said: "Barack loves hip-hop, when I called him he was playing Blueprint in the gym."

If our president is listening to hip music while working out, it can't be all bad.  Truth is, dance and fitness go hand in hand.  I personally and happy to know that Obama takes an active part in keeping fit and staying healthy.

Dancing for fitness is fun, and not expensive.  There is a cool place in Garden Grove that has "$5.00 Freestyle Wednesdays" and they have several freestyle dance and fitness classes and only charge 5 bucks a class.  It really doesn't get any cheaper and it's lots of fun.

Lots of teen/adults show up to take these fun classes and they all revolve around fitness.  If you're local, come by and try it once.  There is no commitment, no monthly dues, no registration fees.  Just show up, pay your 5 dollars and have fun.

How Important IS your First Dance?

Your wedding day is the most important milestone in your life. When a couple commits to share their lives and their love together forever. It's truly a wonderful thing.

One of the best things the couple shares on their first day as man and wife is their first dance. The first dance is symbolic of the couple starting their new life together as one. The first dance is something they will remember for the rest of their lives.  Learning to dance together teaches the couple to work together, it exposes their weakness and strengths to each other. They must learn to face challenges together in learning new patterns and dance technique together. They will face frustrations as well as discover triumphs together. In the end, they will learn to connect on a much deeper and more intimate level as well as share a new and fun activity that gives them both a sense of trust and accomplishment with themselves and each other. It is a truly unique endeavor and one that is worthwhile of any and all married couples. With dancing together, you learn to share and to trust, while still having fun, enjoying each other's company, and being active together. Very few activities the couple will undertake will be as interactive or as intimate as dancing together, and very few activities will be as enjoyable for both the husband and wife.
In preparing for their first dance, thinking about it early is always best, whether or not the couple has danced together before, the first dance holds a special place in the events of their wedding day and it's best to prepare early so that that the dance is as enjoyable and memorable as possible. Three to six months is typical for preparing for the first dance, assuming you want to devote a little bit of time each week over a longer period. Spending an intense couple of weeks while finishing up last preparations for your wedding is usually not the best approach for a stress-free wedding day, though the dance lessons may be a necessary stree-reliever in the last days before the wedding. It's best to schedule at least one lesson each week with your dance instructor, two if you're ambitious, but you'll want to have time to practice in between lessons. Talk to your instructor about finding the best solution for your schedule as well as your personal goals for your first dance.
It's important to pick a song you both love and many couple's already have a special song that they share. Many more, however, are at a loss when it comes to what song they will want to share their first dance to. You will want to listen to several different songs. Plus, your dance instructor will have several recommendations, or can help you either find something that's popular, or help you find something a little more obscure and unique, that will help make your first dance both fun and memorable. Some people pick a song by the style of dance they would like to do at their wedding reception, and certainly your instructor can help you with that as well. Traditionally, the first dance is also known as the 'Bridal Waltz', however especially in recent years, the couple typically doesn't dance a waltz, since most couples tend to select a ballad or love song that is not a waltz to dance to. Your dance instructor will be the best source for answers in selecting a song for your wedding dance.

When learning to dance, you'll learn things that are purely choreography and steps and patterns that are considered social dancing. Remember the difference, because social dance moves are things that you can use impromptu on any dance floor to other songs and even with other partners; choreography is something that both you and your partner have memorized and have predetermined will happen and you more or less just perform together. Social dancing is anything that can be led/followed on the fly during any dance at the leader's discretion. Remember that the social dancing you learn will be the most value because these are things you can carry with you into other dances, other dance styles, and that you can continue to expand upon with your partner so that your dance continues to evolve throughout your lives together.
